Renewal energy
Sector

Castilla-La Mancha is the first spanish región in Instaled Photovoltaic Energy, the second in Termosolar and the third in Wind Energy; 73% of the total installed power in the región is coming from renewal sources.

Photovoltaic generation in Castilla-La Mancha

Out of the 17 Spanish autonomous regions (Comunidades Autónomas), Castilla-La Mancha is the first both regarding installed capacity (20% of Spain) and generation (also 20%).

CSP Generation in Castilla-La Mancha

CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) generation in Spain is extremely concentrated in just 3 regions in the Southern half of the country that provide 95% of the installed capacity. Castilla-La Mancha is the third region in Spain, with 15.2% of the installed capacity and 14.3% of the generation.

Wind power in Castilla-La Mancha

Castilla-La Mancha is one of the leading regions for the wind power industry in Spain. 16.5% of the installed capacity and 16.1% of the generation make it the second of the 17 Spanish regions (Comunidades Autónomas) in both accounts.

Wind power is extremely important in Spain: in 2017, 18% of all electricity generated in Spain came from wind, the highest figure of all major European countries, only surpassed by small countries like Denmark or Portugal. Wind power is the second most important energy source for electricity in Spain.

Bioeconomy

Bioeconomy is part of the primary sector, and it is related to renewable biological resources as part of a new economic scheme.

Castile – La Mancha has plenty of natural resources.

The project ‘Castile – La Mancha Bio-Economy Region’ (CLAMBER Project) provides a basis to turn the region into the role-model for the south of Europe in terms of biomass utilization, especially taking into account that the region is a great producer of this element.

The presence of research centres in the region such as IRIAF, ISFOC or CNH2, shows how Castile – La Mancha is committed to renewal energy and bioeconomy.

Investment opportunities in CLM

The renewable energy plan 2011-2020 for the regional government expects opportunities for companies to arise in the following areas:

Opportunities in photovoltaic
  • R+D activities in CPV at ISFOC (Instituto de Sistemas Fotovoltaicos de Concentración): since 2008, ISFOC has facilities at everybody’s disposal to research in photovoltaic technologies, energy storage systems, etc.
  • Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV)
Opportunities in CSP
  • Development of water consumption reduction and energy storage systems
  • CSP and biomass hybrid plants
  • Improvement of control and monitoring systems
Opportunities in wind power
  • Repowering
  • Development of prediction tools and systems
  • Operation and maintenance
  • Microwind (net metering)
Opportunities in bioeconomy
  • Bio-fuel plants
  • Development of probiotics, active ingredients, etc.
  • Natural skincare
  • Production of bio-plastics
  • Pharmaceutical products with a natural base
